Loop consists a 60-minute sound piece recorded on tape, interwoven with noise and ambient sounds captured from the surrounding environment. Using a custom playback program, the recording is continuously played at varying speeds—normal, accelerated, or slowed down. Depending on the playback speed and direction—whether forward or reversed—an installation of twelve independent lighting units is activated in synchronization. As the light installation moves through phases of convergence, elevation, and dispersion, it mirrors the linear passage of time.
The work emulates temporal progression in nature while simultaneously blurring and reconfiguring how we perceive and measure time through environmental change. Loop thus treats time as a human construct and invites viewers into a perceptual experience that extends beyond conventional reality.
Originally proposed for The Avant/Garde Diaries, a global exhibition organized by Mercedes-Benz, Loop explores sound as a creative medium. Responding to the project’s Taiwan theme—music—young Taiwanese artists were invited to articulate their visions of what it means to be avant-garde through the language of sound.
