His practice investigates the intersection between artificial and natural systems to examine how we, as humans, share, co-produce and sense our diverse, entangled, and paradoxical relationship that emerge from such crossings. Working with materials such as air, light, sound, and data, Wei Hsiang construct devices, situations, and experimental set-ups within spatial and landscape settings. These set-ups often play the role of both observer and creator, mediating our perspectives of dynamic situations and living systems, and the relationships create a dissonance that leads to unpredictable outcomes which test how physical movement, sensory engagement and the interaction of the body and brain influence our perception of our environment. Much of Wei Hsiang’s recent work and research has focused on the concept of man made boundaries as the main field of interrogation. He creates meeting points for a variety of organic and synthetic fragmentations, allowing them to interact and self-evolve. Those encounters manifest themselves in new forms of temporality, morphology or scale, in which he envisions a potential coexistence between humans and non-humans. Wei Hsiang is the recipient of the Kaohsiung Arts Award and was one of the artists selected to take part in Reshaping History - China Youth New Art; in addition, he had also been invited to Asian Art Biennial, and the Avant-Garde Diaries by Mercedes-Benz. Wei Hsiang graduated from Royal College of Art with a master's in Information Experience Design - Experimental Design after his M.F.A from National Taiwan University of Arts. Whilst rethinking our relationship with the rest of our environment, the concept of Equilibrium emerged, which denotes a state of an ecosystem that is decentralised in its nature by interconnecting all the different participants. The goal of this project is to present actions of individuals that stand at the crossroads between humanity and the environment. The work seeks to blur the human-made and the natural world and question their differences as a whole. A new perspective might arise from studying biological membranes as mechanisms of exchange and transference. According to landscape architect James Corner, “rather than separating boundaries, borders are dynamic membranes through which interactions and diverse transformations occur. In ecological terms, the edge is always the most lively and rich place because it is where the occupants and forces of one system meet and interact with those from another.“ Corners method of field operations “enables alternative ideas and effects to be played out through conventional filters and provides ways in which borders may be respected and sustained, while potentially productive forces on either side may be brought together into newly created relationships. Thus, we shift from a world of stable geometric boundaries and distinctions to one of multidimensional transference and network effects.“ One aspect of architectural practice is the separation of habitable and inhabitable space, therefore it necessarily has to deal with the notion of connecting and dividing. This partition visualises our relationship with nature through our concept of property. Our home is designed as a unit that is divided from nature. It is designed to withstand natural influences and to protect us from their unpredictability. Architecture offers us a space of predictability. This installation creates a tunnel connecting the «outsides», using built forms as a vehicle for deconstructing and reconstructing our physical and psychological perception of our habitations, beyond sovereignty and property. To rethink our built environment we propose a possibility of coexistence with the non-human by narrowing the boundaries between «inside» and «outside», blurring the barrier between «over here» and The project employs an antenna to receive signals from satellites orbiting beyond Earth’s atmosphere. These satellites operate according to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) or UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) as standardized temporal references. In this sense, time becomes fragmented—dispersed into floating pieces across the sky—since each satellite orbits within a realm where territorial boundaries and time zones cease to exist. On the ground, I attempt to capture and decode transmissions from weather satellites (NOAA 15, NOAA 18) that occasionally pass through the GMT zone (London) in space. Simultaneously, I photograph the sky from the opposite margin on Earth. By juxtaposing these two perspectives—one from above and one from below—I bring together viewpoints that search for each other yet can never meet. Through this act of cross-referencing, the work defines a fleeting volume and moment of the “present.” <img width="1700" height="3036" width_o="1700" height_o="3036" human-made boundaries that subdivide the natural environment through regulation and law. My focus lies upon the demarcation of time and space as a human-made construction. The invisible division between time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions instead of strictly following longitude. In some areas such as western Ireland, the division of time thus deviates to pass around its national territory. (Coastline) This project uses light as a vehicle to bridge two western headlands of Ireland at midnight. The light beam strikes from one headland (0 hr) towards another over the North Atlantic Ocean (-1 hr). To counter the unpredictability of nature, these two reoccurring systems constantly have to be manually re-aligned. Hence, it can be understood that it is impossible to find a perfectly regulated framework of time.&nbsp; This project proposes an alternative model to the perception of time and space by manifesting the reoccurring patterns in between earth’s rotation around the sun. Shadow paths of a generic monolith are used to capture the sun’s relationship to a site over a predetermined time span. The angle of the shadow and its imprints on the ground culminate in a site and time specific structure, that defines a moment within the wider universe. <img width="5011" height="2669" width_o="5011" gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun, as well as the rotation of the Earth. During my observation along the River Thames in March 2020, the tidal cycle lasted approximately 4 hours and 17 minutes. This duration is shorter than the minimum temporal scale within which orbiting satellites can accurately document the river’s continuously shifting ebb and flow, along with the changing contours of its banks. To refine a digital geographical representation, I employed photogrammetry as a measuring device to record tidal changes while walking within the tidal zone. However, the optical performance of the scanning process was disrupted by fluctuating reflections from the river’s surface. As a result, the documentation unexpectedly revealed a hidden, virtual island—an artificial geography generated by the machine’s interpretation of a glitch or blind spot in perceiving the dynamic boundary between water and land. Both capacities generate individual versions of reality, each applying distinctive reading and data procession. While humans experience through sensual consciousness, computers assemble reality through algorithms, leading one to assume that reality is indeed, a subjective phenomena.Does an outcome not match our perspective of reality, we often declare a machine-made recreation of reality as erroneous. By concentrating on these automated “malfunctions“, our environmental aesthetic is fundamentally reassessed as a result of probing into our perceptible reality. Therefore the project interrogates the boundaries between visible and invisible, tangible and intangible, ultimately what is real and what is unreal. It raises questions of humanity’s dependency on AI and wether machines have become an inevitable extension to the species. <img width="2379" height="1655" width_o="2379" height_o="1655" ambition within an increasingly interconnected network. These impulses travel invisibly and silently through the atmosphere, forming the invisible infrastructure of modern communication. Yet when a signal or message is transmitted, what else does it encounter along its path? In this project, directional antennas connected to containers of liquid metal were installed within an urban environment. Each configuration is capable of receiving the electromagnetic fields propagating through space at a given moment. Depending on the intensity and flux of these electromagnetic currents, the liquid metal reorganizes itself, evolving into crystalline formations. The environment, therefore, can be understood as a perceptual order—one that we selectively construct through our capacities for interaction. In perception, abstract information is extracted from its context; once translated into internal representation, it becomes detached from its origin and can be processed or manipulated independently. The intention of this project is to observe the body’s fluid adjustments and self-regulating responses to space and time. I documented sensations of light, temperature, sound, and spatial conditions in digital data while walking along a street—recording inputs from both my physical body and electronic sensors.
